Sandglass Theatre presents D-Generation: An Exultation of Larks

Sandglass Theatre

  • Sandglass Theatre presents D-Generation: An Exultation of Larks
Clayton Center for the Arts
Date: Thursday March 26, 2015 through Sunday March 29, 2015.
Time: Times Vary
Category: Arts / Exhibits

Location: Clayton Center for the Arts
Price: $15 & $20
Sandglass Theater is an internationally known theater company specializing in combining puppets with music, actors and visual imagery.
D-Generation: An Exaltation of Larks is a full-length theater piece based on stories written collaboratively by groups of people with late-stage dementia. The work is performed by three puppeteers (the caregivers), and five puppets (the residents of a care-facility). Set to a compelling original score and striking animated video segments, D-Generation takes us into a world that is all too much a part of our lives.
D-Generation explores the rich creative potential and ability to communicate that exists in people with late-stage dementia. Their words, their images, and their creative imaginations, yield work that is poetic, humorous, and quite mysterious. From these stories, Sandglass Theater forms scenes of the inner life of the characters, and creates a piece that reflects both the stigma and the acceptance, the despair and the joy, that is equally present and possible, in both the person with dementia and in their caregivers and family members.
“It is so rare anymore that I see theater that engages me, has me leaning forward, leaning into the event. Sandglass did that . . . and more. It [D-Generation] is a beautiful piece.”
~ Scott T. Cummings, Chair Theatre Dept., Boston College

“That Bass can conjure so much history and soul out of a two-foot puppet is its own mystery…. Rivka’s wispy gray hair and Gershon’s frail chest actually seem to stir with the puppet’s every breath.” ~ —The Village Voice, New York City, USA

“It is one of the must beautiful and affecting theater pieces I’ve ever seen. I laughed and cried (literally) and was blown away by the supreme artistry of these puppeteers and actors. You come away with all kinds of fresh thoughts about aging, and time, and living in the moment, and you have a deeper understanding of those who have travelled down the road before us.”
~ Douglas Anderson, Executive Director of Town Hall Theater, Middlebury, VT

Dry cleaners in Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Clinton, Farragut, Maryville, Sevierville, and Morristown are lending a hand by collecting and cleaning donations, which are then given to Goodwill. These goods are sold in local stores to generate funds for Goodwill's job training programs and employment services. In 2014, Goodwill served over 4,000 individuals with barriers to employment in East Tennessee.

Find a list of participating dry cleaners at www.gwiktn.org. There, you can also learn about Goodwill's vocational programs, which wouldn't be possible without the support of our donors.

What is Bowl for Kids Sake?

Bowl for Kid's Sake is the largest annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee. More than 900 community members will come together to raise money to mentor area children. Companies, teams and individuals raise money then come to out to a bowling alley of their choice and bowl for an hour and a half. Every dollar raised will provide disadvantaged children with a caring adult friend. Last year we provided 950 children with the guidance, friendship and fun of a Big Brother or Sister. With your help, we will reach our goal of touching the lives of 1,000 children over the next year.
